1976-S Clad Washington Quarter Gem Proof

0.0000 troy oz 1976 Gem Proof

In 1976, the San Francisco Mint produced a special clad edition of the Washington Quarter in stunning proof quality. This coin features the familiar portrait of George Washington on the obverse, a design originally introduced in 1932 to mark the bicentennial of the first president's birth. Replacing the previous Standing Liberty design, this portrait has become a cornerstone of American pocket change. While the original 1932 quarters were struck in silver, the composition of these coins shifted following the Coinage Act of 1965. This 1976-S specimen is composed of a cupronickel clad copper blend, resulting in a bright, durable finish. The obverse displays the dual date of 1776 to 1976, celebrating the nation's bicentennial, alongside the traditional mottos of liberty and trust. The reverse features the classic eagle design, paired with the denomination of one quarter dollar and the national motto of unity.
