In 1978, the San Francisco Mint produced a striking proof edition of the Washington quarter, a coin series that originally debuted on August 1, 1932. This design was first introduced to honor the two-hundredth anniversary of George Washington's birth, taking the place of the previous Standing Liberty quarter. While the earliest issues in this series were struck in silver, the metal composition shifted following the passage of the Coinage Act of 1965. This 1978-S specimen features the modern clad composition, consisting of a cupronickel outer layer bonded to an inner core of pure copper. The obverse displays the classic portrait of George Washington, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the 1978 date positioned below. On the reverse, the eagle motif is surrounded by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR.
