1979-S Washington Quarter Type-I Gem Proof

0.0000 troy oz 1979 Gem Proof

In 1979, the San Francisco Mint produced a stunning proof edition of the Washington quarter, a coin series that first debuted in 1932. Originally introduced to mark the two hundredth anniversary of George Washington's birth, this design took the place of the previous Standing Liberty quarter. While early versions of this denomination were struck in silver, the metal composition shifted following the passage of the Coinage Act of 1965. This modern 1979 issue features the copper core clad in a cupronickel alloy. The obverse of the coin displays the classic profile of George Washington, accompanied by the inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1979 date. On the reverse, the traditional themes of the United States of America are represented alongside the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Graded as a Gem Proof, this coin showcases the sharp details and mirror-like finishes characteristic of specialized proof minting techniques.
