1980-S Washington Quarter Gem Proof
In 1980, the San Francisco Mint produced a brilliant proof edition of the classic Washington quarter. This coin features a highly polished finish, showcasing the familiar profile of George Washington on the front alongside the traditional inscriptions of liberty and trust. The reverse displays the eagle motif, surrounded by the country's name and the quarter dollar denomination. Originally introduced to mark the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth, this design first entered circulation on August 1, 1932, bringing an end to the previous Standing Liberty design. While early versions of the coin were struck in silver, a major shift occurred following the Coinage Act of 1965. Since that pivotal year, these quarters have been minted using a clad composition consisting of a copper core bonded with an outer layer of copper-nickel, a metallic blend that continues to define the modern United States quarter.
