The 1981 Washington quarter from the Philadelphia Mint represents a classic era of modern United States circulating coinage. Struck with a brilliant uncirculated finish, this twenty-five cent piece features a specialized metallic composition consisting of an outer layer of copper and nickel bonded securely to an inner core of pure copper. On the obverse, the coin displays the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington, designed by John Flanagan. This side bears the word LIBERTY positioned above the portrait, with the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the left and the date 1981 below. The small letter P near the lower right of the portrait denotes its origin at the Philadelphia facility. The reverse side presents a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Above the eagle, the traditional Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, while the country name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches over the top. The denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR, is clearly marked along the bottom rim, completing a design that has defined American pocket change for generations.
