The 1985-S Washington Quarter represents a modern chapter in a coin series that originally began in 1932. This particular specimen is a Gem Proof, a designation that highlights its sharp details and highly reflective surfaces, which are characteristic of coins struck specifically for collectors at the San Francisco Mint. The obverse features the familiar portrait of George Washington, looking left. Surrounding his profile are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1985 date and the S mint mark, indicating its origin in San Francisco. This design was first introduced to commemorate the bicentennial of Washington's birth, replacing the previous Standing Liberty design. On the reverse, a majestic eagle with spread wings is depicted. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR frame the eagle, accompanied by the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. While the very first coins in this series in 1932 were composed of silver, this 1985 issue is made of a cupronickel clad copper composition, which became the standard for the denomination after 1965.
