1987-S Washington Quarter Gem Proof
In 1987, the San Francisco Mint produced a striking proof version of the Washington quarter, a denomination that originally entered circulation in 1932 to replace the Standing Liberty quarter. Released on August 1 of that year, the series underwent a major compositional shift in 1965, moving away from silver to a cupronickel clad copper composition. This 1987 issue features that modern clad composition, polished to a brilliant proof finish. The obverse of the coin displays the profile of the first United States president, George Washington. Surrounding his portrait are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the S mint mark indicating its San Francisco origin and the 1987 year of issue. On the reverse, a detailed eagle serves as the central motif. The traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is positioned above the bird, while the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR frame the design.
