In 1988, the Philadelphia Mint produced this twenty-five cent piece, continuing a long-running American tradition. The Washington quarter series first emerged in 1932, created to honor the two-hundredth anniversary of George Washington's birth. This new design permanently took the place of the previous Standing Liberty quarter. While early versions of this coin were struck in silver, a major metallic shift occurred in 1965. From that point forward, circulating quarters were made with an outer layer of copper and nickel bonded to an interior core of pure copper. This 1988 issue showcases that multi-layered clad composition, preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The obverse displays the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, designed by John Flanagan, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle clutches an olive branch alongside a bundle of arrows, representing both peace and defense. The traditional mottos UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR frame this classic reverse image.
