1988-S Washington Quarter Gem Proof
The Washington quarter series first emerged in 1932, stepping in to replace the previous Standing Liberty design. This debut on August 1, 1932, was timed to honor the two-hundredth anniversary of George Washington's birth. While early versions of this twenty-five cent piece were struck in silver, the metallic makeup underwent a major transformation following the Coinage Act of 1965. Since that pivotal legislation, these circulating and proof coins have been minted using a copper core clad in cupronickel. This particular 1988 specimen from the San Francisco Mint showcases the classic design elements in a stunning Gem Proof finish. The front of the coin features the familiar profile of George Washington, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the year 1988, and the S mint mark. On the reverse, a bold eagle stands as the central image, surrounded by the traditional legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR.
