In 1990, the Philadelphia Mint produced this twenty-five cent piece, continuing a classic American series that first began in 1932. The United States originally introduced the Washington quarter to honor the two-hundredth anniversary of George Washington's birth. This design took the place of the previous Standing Liberty quarter, transforming the look of America's pocket change. While pre-1965 quarters in this series were struck in silver, this 1990 specimen features the modern composition adopted after 1964, consisting of a cupronickel cladding over a pure copper core. The obverse displays the familiar profile of the first president, surrounded by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the 1990 date and the P mint mark representing the Philadelphia facility. The reverse of the coin features the traditional eagle design, accompanied by the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the country name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR. This particular coin survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving its original mint luster just as it looked when it left the coining press.
