In 2009, the United States Mint expanded its commemorative coinage to honor the diverse territories of the nation. Among these releases is a twenty-five cent piece struck at the Denver Mint, dedicated to the U.S. Virgin Islands. This particular coin is preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, capturing the sharp details of its unique regional imagery just as it appeared when first minted. The reverse side of the coin displays a detailed map outlining Saint Thomas, Saint John, and Saint Croix, the three primary islands that make up the territory. Surrounding the geographical outline are three symbols of the local environment: the delicate bananaquit bird, the yellow cedar flower, and a tyre palm tree. Inscribed alongside these natural features is the territory's inspiring motto, "United in Pride and Hope," along with the year of issue, 2009, and the traditional national motto "E Pluribus Unum." On the obverse, the coin features the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington. This classic depiction is accompanied by the inscriptions "United States of America," "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and "Quarter Dollar." A small "D" mint mark is positioned on the obverse, indicating its production at the Denver facility.
