In 2009, the United States Mint celebrated the nation's territories with a series of special quarter designs. Among these is a distinctive issue honoring American Samoa, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This particular coin survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the crisp details of its original strike just as it appeared when leaving the coining press. The front of the quarter displays the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally created by sculptor John Flanagan. Inscriptions surrounding the presidency's central figure include the traditional national mottos of liberty and trust, along with the denomination and the Philadelphia mint mark. On the reverse, artist Charles L. Vickers brings the cultural heritage of the Pacific islands to life. The design showcases an ava bowl, a ceremonial whisk, and a staff positioned in the foreground, while a coconut tree stands on a sandy shore in the background. The reverse also features the traditional Samoan phrase "SAMOA MUAMUA LE ATUA", which translates to "Samoa, Let God Be First", alongside the year of issue and the United States motto.
