In 2009, the United States Mint celebrated the nation's territories with a series of special quarter designs. Among these is the striking tribute to the U.S. Virgin Islands, struck at the San Francisco Mint. This particular coin is a clad proof, minted with a high-quality finish that highlights the intricate details of both the obverse and reverse designs. The reverse of the coin, designed by Joseph F. Menna, presents a detailed geographical and natural portrait of the territory. It features the distinct outlines of the three major islands alongside a bananaquit bird, a yellow cedar flower, and a tyre palm tree. Inscribed on this side are the words "U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS" and "United in Pride and Hope," alongside the traditional national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the year 2009. On the obverse, the classic portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan faces left. Surrounding the first president are the familiar inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR." The "S" mint mark is clearly visible, denoting its origin from the San Francisco Mint, and the initials "JFN" pay tribute to the original sculptor.
