Attica Athens Silver Tetradrachm Owl (353-294 BC) MS NGC 3/3
Dating from the period of 353 to 294 BC, this ancient silver tetradrachm represents one of the most recognizable and enduring coin designs of the classical world. Minted in the region of Attica within the city-state of Athens, this coin is a remarkable survivor of antiquity, preserved in exceptional Mint State condition with strike and surface quality both certified at three out of five. The obverse features the profile of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare, facing right. She wears her characteristic crested helmet, which is decorated with olive leaves. This portrait served as a powerful symbol of Athenian identity and influence across the Mediterranean trade routes. On the reverse, the goddess's companion, the owl, stands facing right within an incuse square. Accompanying the owl are a crescent moon and an olive sprig bearing two leaves. The Greek letters A O E are clearly visible, representing the city of Athens. This classic combination of imagery remains one of the most celebrated designs in numismatic history.
