Attica Athens Silver Tetradrachm Owl (353-294 BC) MS NGC 4/3
Dating back to the period between 353 and 294 BC, this silver tetradrachm originates from the ancient region of Attica, specifically the city-state of Athens. It represents one of the most recognizable and enduring coin designs of the classical world, serving as a testament to the economic and cultural influence of Athens during the era. The obverse side of the coin displays the right-facing profile of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, depicted wearing her characteristic military helmet. On the reverse, the design features her sacred companion, an owl standing and facing right. Accompanying the owl are a crescent moon, an olive sprig bearing two distinct leaves, and the Greek letters "A O E" representing the city. These elements are framed within a traditional incuse square. This particular ancient silver piece has survived the centuries in extraordinary condition, evaluated as Mint State. It has received a strike rating of 4 out of 5 and a surface quality rating of 3 out of 5, indicating a high level of preservation for a coin minted over two millennia ago.
