In the early days of the United States Mint, coin production was an art of manual precision, resulting in fascinating variations that capture the imagination of observers today. Minted in Philadelphia, the coin is composed of 89.24 percent silver, containing approximately 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. The obverse side presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair flowing beneath a traditional Phrygian cap. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, representing the original colonies, with the date 1823 stamped below.
