In 1838, the United States Mint produced a fascinating silver half dime that captures a transitional moment in American coinage. This five-cent piece, struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, showcases the early version of the iconic Liberty Seated design before later modifications were introduced. Created by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Lady Liberty sitting upon a rock. In one hand, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests on a shield inscribed with the word LIBERTY.
