The year 1840 marked a fascinating moment of transition for United States silver coinage, beautifully captured in this quarter dollar struck at the New Orleans Mint. This specific issue represents the first variety of the design, distinguished by a notable omission: there is no extra fabric or drapery hanging from the figure's left elbow. Additionally, the reverse design of this early era lacks any motto above the central eagle, presenting a clean and uncluttered aesthetic that differs from later iterations of the series. On the obverse, the seated figure of Liberty holds a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand, while her other hand rests upon a shield. The reverse features a heraldic eagle perched on a branch, grasping three arrows in its talons, with a shield emblazoned across its chest. Struck in 90% fine silver with a metal content of 0.1788 troy ounces, this piece has survived in Very Fine condition, preserving the elegant artistry of Christian Gobrecht's classic design.
