This silver quarter from 1844 represents an intriguing era of American coinage, struck at the southern branch mint in New Orleans. With a total mintage of only 740,000 pieces, this issue is a compelling find for those who appreciate early United States silver. The coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 to 0.1875 troy ounces of precious metal, and has been certified in Extra Fine 45 condition, showing wonderful detail from its mid nineteenth century production. The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's classic design of Lady Liberty, who is shown seated and looking toward the left. In her left hand, she holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, while her right hand rests upon a shield. A semi-circle of thirteen stars arches over her, representing the original colonies, with the year 1844 anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a powerful eagle is depicted with its wings spread, ready to take flight. The eagle carries a shield upon its breast, grasping an olive branch of peace in its right talons and a trio of arrows in its left. The inscription surrounding the central design reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," while the denomination is abbreviated below as "QUAR. DOL." with the distinctive "O" mint mark of the New Orleans facility positioned just above it.
