In 1851, the United States Mint produced a tiny silver coin that carried a powerful image of American identity. This half dime, struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.0387 troy ounces, represents a fascinating era of pre-1933 American coinage. Despite its small size, the coin showcases an elegant and detailed design that captures the artistic spirit of the mid-nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin features a seated figure of Liberty. She is depicted holding a pole topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield, symbolizing protection and freedom. Below this central figure, the year 1851 is clearly inscribed.
