1853 Liberty Seated Quarter w/Arrows & Rays VG

In 1853, the United States Mint produced a distinctive variation of the Liberty Seated Quarter that remains highly recognizable today. This silver coin, struck with a purity of 0.900 and containing 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal, stands out due to temporary design elements added to the reverse. The Philadelphia Mint produced these pieces without a mint mark, and this particular example survives in Very Good condition. The obverse features Liberty seated upon a rock, her gaze directed to the left. She holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of freedom, while thirteen stars arch above her to represent the original colonies. The year 1853 is inscribed clearly at the bottom. Arrows were placed on either side of this date, a specific feature meant to indicate a change in the coin's weight. On the reverse, an eagle faces left with a shield draped across its chest. The bird grasps an olive branch of peace in one talon and three arrows of defense in the other. Surrounding the eagle are rays pointing outward, a visual element exclusive to the quarters and half dollars minted in this specific year. The legends on the reverse include the issuing nation and the denomination, abbreviated as QUAR. DOL.
