The 1891 Liberty Seated quarter represents the final year of a classic United States coin design that spanned over half a century. Struck in 90% fine silver, this piece contains approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal. Having circulated through daily commerce, this coin survives in Fine condition, showing the honest wear of its journey through the late nineteenth century. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty seated upon a rock, her gaze directed to the left. She holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, while thirteen stars arch over her to represent the original American colonies. The year 1891 is anchored at the very bottom of the design. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted facing left with a shield draped across its chest. The bird grips an olive branch in its right talon and a clutch of three arrows in its left, representing the dual concepts of peace and defense. The inscriptions on this side denote the issuing nation and the quarter-dollar denomination.
