The year 1891 marked the end of an era for United States coinage, representing the final year of issue for the celebrated Liberty Seated quarter. Struck in 90% fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this particular coin has survived in Very Fine circulated condition, preserving the intricate details of a design that defined American pocket change for over half a century. Created by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin presents Lady Liberty seated upon a rock, her gaze directed to the left. She holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of freedom, while thirteen stars arch above her to represent the original colonies. The year 1891 is anchored firmly at the base of the design. On the reverse, an American eagle is depicted with wings spread, facing left. A shield protects its chest as its talons grasp both an olive branch of peace and three arrows of war. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUAR. DOL." frame this patriotic scene, completing a historic silver piece that captures the transition of late nineteenth-century American coinage.
