In 1853, the New Orleans Mint struck a fascinating silver half dime that tells a story of changing metal standards. This five-cent coin, composed of 90 percent silver, contains 0.0387 troy ounces of precious metal. The piece is highly recognizable due to the distinctive arrows placed on either side of the date, a design modification that makes this specific year stand out to observers of nineteenth-century American coinage. The obverse of the coin displays a classic representation of Liberty, depicted in a seated position. In her right hand, she supports a shield, while her left hand holds a staff topped with a liberty cap. This detailed imagery was the work of Christian Gobrecht. On the reverse side, the coin features a delicate wreath that encircles the half dime denomination, creating a balanced and elegant aesthetic. This particular specimen survives in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation.
