1853-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar w/Arrows & Rays VF

0.3599 troy oz .900 1853 Very Fine

In 1853, the New Orleans Mint struck a distinctive variation of the United States half dollar. This silver coin, composed of 90 percent silver with a metal content of 0.3599 troy ounces, stands out in American numismatic history due to specific design modifications made for this year. The coin is graded in Very Fine condition, showing clear details of its intricate, mid-nineteenth-century imagery. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests on a shield. For the year 1853, arrows were added on either side of the date at the bottom of the coin. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted perched on a branch while clutching three arrows, with a shield emblazoned across its chest. Rays of light radiate outward behind the eagle, a striking feature unique to this year's issue. The reverse also bears the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOL.
