1853-O Liberty Seated Quarter w/Arrows & Rays VG
In 1853, the United States Mint introduced a temporary design modification to its quarter dollar, creating a highly distinctive variety that captures a pivotal moment in monetary history. The 1853-O Liberty Seated quarter features two prominent visual markers: arrows flanking the date on the obverse and a radiant pattern of rays surrounding the eagle on the reverse. These additions were not merely decorative; they served as a public signal that the coin contained a reduced weight of silver, establishing a new standard for the nation's fractional currency. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse presents Liberty in a seated position, holding a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests upon a shield. Below this image, the date 1853 is nestled between two upward-pointing arrows. The reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings, perched upon an olive branch and clutching three arrows, with a shield draped across its chest. On this specific one-year design, a bold array of rays emanates outward from the central eagle, filling the field. This particular silver coin, composed of 90 percent silver, was produced at the New Orleans Mint and bears the 'O' mint mark on the reverse, just below the eagle. It survives today in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while still clearly displaying the essential elements of this fascinating, short-lived design.
