1854 Liberty Seated Quarter XF w/Arrows

0.1788 troy oz .900 1854 Extra Fine

The year 1854 brought a subtle but fascinating visual change to the United States quarter. This silver coin, struck in the pre-1933 era, features the Liberty Seated design created by Christian Gobrecht. On the obverse, Liberty is depicted resting on a rock, holding a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand cradles a shield. To denote a weight change implemented during this era, tiny arrows were placed on either side of the 1854 date at the bottom of the coin. The reverse displays a classic heraldic eagle perched on a branch, grasping three arrows in its talons. A shield is positioned over the eagle's chest, surrounded by the legend indicating the nation of origin and the denomination, shortened to QUAR. DOL. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint without a mint mark, this piece contains 0.17875 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900. Preserved in Extra Fine condition, the coin offers a clear look at the intricate details of mid-nineteenth-century American coinage.
