In 1854, the New Orleans branch of the United States Mint struck this tiny silver coin, which carries a face value of five cents. Containing 0.0387 troy ounces of 90 percent silver, this piece belongs to the long-running Liberty Seated series, a staple of early American coinage. The obverse side of the coin displays a seated figure of Liberty. In her right hand, she supports a shield, while her left hand holds a staff topped with a liberty cap. The year 1854 is placed directly beneath her feet. On the reverse, the words HALF DIME are encircled by a delicate wreath. The surrounding inscription, partially visible as F AMERICA, represents the United States of America. This classic mid-nineteenth-century design was originally created by Christian Gobrecht.
