In 1854, the New Orleans Mint produced over five million silver half dollars, each containing 0.3575 troy ounces of fine silver. This particular coin, surviving in Fine condition, offers a tangible look at mid nineteenth century American coinage. The New Orleans origin is marked by the "O" mint mark, representing a key southern branch mint of the era. The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's iconic depiction of Liberty seated. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle perched on a branch, grasping three arrows, with a shield positioned across its chest.
