The year 1855 brought to life a silver quarter-dollar that remains a captivating window into mid-nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this twenty-five cent piece showcases the enduring Liberty Seated design, a motif that defined an entire era of United States currency. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, allowing us to appreciate the artistry of its engraving despite the passage of generations. On the obverse, the figure of Liberty is depicted sitting upon a rock. Facing to her left, she holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. Surrounding her are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the date 1855 inscribed clearly below. The word LIBERTY is visible on the shield she holds, anchoring the central theme of the design. The reverse of the coin features a heraldic eagle facing left. On its chest, the bird bears a defensive shield, while its talons grasp an olive branch of peace in the right and three arrows of readiness in the left. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the abbreviated denomination QUAR. DOL. encircle the eagle, completing a design that beautifully balances national symbols of strength and peace.
