1856 Liberty Seated Dime Small Date VG

0.0715 troy oz .900 1856 Very Good

The year 1856 saw the production of a United States ten cent piece that showcases one of the most enduring design eras in American coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this Liberty Seated dime contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Surviving today in Very Good condition, this specific coin features the Small Date variety, a subtle detail that invites close inspection from those who appreciate the minute differences in nineteenth-century die varieties. On the obverse, the design by Christian Gobrecht presents Lady Liberty seated upon a rock. In her left hand, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her right hand rests upon a shield adorned with the word LIBERTY. The reverse side is dedicated to the coin's denomination, displaying the words ONE DIME encircled by a detailed wreath, which is itself surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
