The year 1856 saw the production of a classic American silver quarter, minted in Philadelphia from 90 percent pure silver. This twenty-five cent piece represents a fascinating era of United States coinage, carrying a total silver content of 0.1788 troy ounces. The coin is preserved in Fine condition, allowing observers to appreciate the intricate details of a mid nineteenth century design that circulated widely during a transformative period in the nation's history. On the obverse, the design by Christian Gobrecht presents Lady Liberty seated upon a rock. Facing to her left, she holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom.
