1856 Liberty Seated Quarter VF

0.1788 troy oz .900 1856 Very Fine

The 1856 Liberty Seated quarter represents a classic era of American silver coinage, minted in Philadelphia with a composition of 90 percent silver. This 25 cent piece features the iconic Liberty Seated motif, a design that defined United States silver currency for over half a century. On the obverse, Liberty sits upon a rock, facing left, holding a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. Thirteen stars encircle her, representing the original colonies, with the date 1856 anchored at the bottom. The reverse displays a powerful eagle facing left with a shield across its chest. In its talons, the eagle grasps an olive branch and three arrows, representing peace and readiness for defense. This side of the coin bears the inscriptions of the issuing nation and the denomination, shortened to QUAR. DOL. at the base. This specific specimen has survived in Very Fine condition, showing clear details of the original engraving by Christian Gobrecht.
