1856-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar Fine
In 1856, the New Orleans Mint produced a run of 2,658,000 half dollars, each struck from 90 percent silver with a precious metal weight of 0.3575 troy ounces. This particular fifty-cent piece survives today in Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that actively circulated during a turbulent decade in American history. The obverse features Liberty in a seated position. In her hands, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield. The reverse displays an eagle perched upon a branch, clutching three arrows in its talons, with a shield positioned across its chest. Christian Gobrecht designed these elegant motifs, which are framed by the bold inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL.
