0.3575 troy oz .900 1856 Extra Fine

Struck in the pre 1933 era, this 1856 silver half dollar is a fascinating artifact from the New Orleans Mint, bearing the distinctive 'O' mint mark. Composed of 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal (with a total silver content of 0.3866 ounces). This particular specimen is preserved in Extra Fine condition, showcasing the intricate details of a mid nineteenth century American design. On the obverse, the figure of Liberty is depicted sitting down, holding a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while resting her other hand on a shield. The word LIBERTY is inscribed across the shield, and the year 1856 is clearly visible below the figure. This classic presentation was created by Christian Gobrecht. The reverse side displays a powerful eagle perched upon a branch, clutching three arrows in its talons. A shield is positioned across the eagle's chest, completing a design that represents the symbolic imagery of the United States during this formative period.
