1857 Liberty Seated Half Dime VG

In the mid nineteenth century, the United States minted a tiny silver five-cent piece that carried a remarkably detailed design. This 1857 half dime, struck in 90% fine silver, showcases the artistry of Christian Gobrecht. Despite its small size, containing just 0.0387 troy ounces of precious metal, the coin serves as a beautiful canvas for early American coinage imagery. The front of the coin features Liberty in a seated position. In her hands, she holds a staff topped with a liberty cap, while a shield rests by her side. Below this central figure, the date 1857 is clearly displayed. The reverse side of the coin is dedicated to the denomination, with the words HALF DIME encircled by a detailed wreath. Surrounding this central design is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, framing the wreath. This particular coin has survived in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation before the Civil War. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, it represents a fascinating era of American silver coinage when even the smallest denominations were crafted from precious metal.
