In the decade preceding the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced a tiny silver treasure that offers a window into mid nineteenth century artistry. The 1857 half dime, struck in 90 percent silver, represents a fascinating era of American coinage where small change carried significant aesthetic detail. Despite its diminutive size, containing just 0.0387 ounces of silver, this coin showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the period. The front of the coin displays a graceful depiction of Liberty in a seated position. In her hands, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a protective shield. This elegant composition, created by engraver Christian Gobrecht, became one of the most enduring motifs on American silver currency during the 1800s. The year 1857 is clearly anchored at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, the coin features its denomination, expressed as "HALF DIME", nestled within a beautifully detailed wreath. The surrounding inscription reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", framing the central wreath and completing a design that is both functional and highly artistic.
