0.0715 troy oz .900 1857 Very Fine

This silver dime, minted in 1857 at the New Orleans branch mint, offers a fascinating look at mid nineteenth century American coinage. Struck in 90 percent pure silver, the coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. It survives today in Very Fine condition, showing the clear details of a design that circulated widely during a transformative era in United States history. The obverse side displays the iconic image of Liberty in a seated position. In her right hand, she supports a shield, while her left hand holds a staff topped with a liberty cap. The year 1857 is inscribed below the figure. On the reverse, the words ONE DIME are encircled by a detailed wreath, which is itself surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular issue bears the O mint mark, indicating its origin at the historic southern minting facility.
