In the years preceding the American Civil War, the New Orleans Mint produced this silver five-cent piece. Struck in 1857, this half dime is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.0358 troy ounces of the precious metal. It represents a fascinating era of regional coin production in the American South, bearing the distinctive 'O' mint mark of the Louisiana facility. The obverse of the coin displays a classic mid-nineteenth-century design by Christian Gobrecht. It depicts the figure of Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests on a shield. The reverse features a delicate wreath that encircles the face value of the coin, surrounded by the legend of the issuing nation.
