1857-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar VF

0.3575 troy oz .900 1857 Very Fine

In 1857, the branch mint in New Orleans produced a silver half dollar featuring one of the most enduring motifs in American coinage. Struck with a purity of 90 percent silver, this fifty-cent piece contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a fascinating era of pre-1933 United States currency, preserved today in Very Fine condition. The obverse side displays Christian Gobrecht's classic depiction of Liberty. She is shown seated, holding a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests upon a shield inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below this central figure, the year 1857 is clearly visible. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted perched upon a branch while grasping three arrows in its talons. A shield is positioned across the eagle's chest, mirroring the patriotic theme of the obverse. This side also features the New Orleans mint mark, indicating its historical origin at the southern minting facility.
