1858 Liberty Seated Half Dime Good

0.0387 troy oz .900 1858 Good

In 1858, the United States Mint produced a tiny silver coin that carried immense artistic detail. This half dime, struck with a purity of 90 percent silver, contains just under 0.039 troy ounces of precious metal. Despite its small size, the coin showcases a complex and elegant design by Christian Gobrecht, capturing the artistic spirit of mid nineteenth century American coinage. The obverse of this five cent piece features Lady Liberty seated on a rock. In one hand, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield, symbolizing protection and freedom. The year 1858 is anchored at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, the coin features a delicate wreath that encircles the denomination. Surrounding this central wreath is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, framing a design that served as a staple of daily commerce in the pre 1933 era.
