1858 Liberty Seated Quarter VF

The year 1858 saw the production of a silver quarter dollar that beautifully captures the artistic sensibilities of mid-nineteenth-century America. Minted in Philadelphia, this twenty-five cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. Surviving today in Very Fine condition, the coin offers a clear window into the craftsmanship of its era. On the obverse, the design showcases Lady Liberty in a seated position. She holds a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests upon a shield inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below this central figure, the date 1858 is clearly visible. This elegant depiction was the work of Christian Gobrecht, whose artistry defined a major epoch of American coinage. The reverse of the coin features a powerful eagle with a shield emblazoned across its chest. The majestic bird is perched upon a branch while clutching three arrows in its talons. Surrounding this central motif are the legends indicating the nation of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination, which is abbreviated as QUAR. DOL.
