1858-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar SS-Republic Shipwreck NGC

0.3575 troy oz .900 1858 NGC

This 1858 silver half dollar carries a remarkable connection to the maritime past, having been recovered from the famous shipwreck of the S.S. Republic. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, the coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Its survival through a deep-sea shipwreck adds a layer of intrigue to an already classic piece of mid-nineteenth-century American currency. The obverse side features the iconic Liberty Seated design, showing Liberty resting on a rock while holding a staff topped with a liberty cap, her other hand supporting a shield. On the reverse, a spread-winged eagle clutches an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, with a shield emblazoned across its chest. The legible inscriptions on the coin include the year 1858 on the obverse, and the denomination HALF DOL. along with the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, on the reverse.
