1860-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar VF

0.3599 troy oz .900 1860 Very Fine

Struck in the final year before the American Civil War, this 1860 silver half dollar represents a fascinating era of United States coinage. Minted in New Orleans, the coin bears the distinctive O mint mark, identifying its southern origin. Crafted from 90 percent silver, it contains approximately 0.3599 troy ounces of precious metal and carries a face value of 50 cents. The obverse of the coin displays Christian Gobrecht's elegant depiction of Lady Liberty. She is shown seated, holding a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests on a shield. The year 1860 is clearly inscribed below the figure. On the reverse, a detailed eagle is depicted perched upon a branch while clutching three arrows. A shield is positioned across the eagle's chest, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL. This specimen survives in Very Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of a mid nineteenth century design.
