This 1860 silver half dollar carries a remarkable story that connects the pre-Civil War era to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, the coin features the classic Liberty Seated design on its obverse, where Liberty sits holding a staff topped with a cap, her other hand resting on a shield. The reverse displays an eagle with a shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. This design was the work of Christian Gobrecht. What makes this specific piece extraordinary is its journey. It was aboard the steamship S.S. Republic when the vessel sank during a hurricane on October 25, 1865. The shipwreck remained lost for over a century until its discovery in August 2003, nearly 1,700 feet below the surface. This coin was among the treasures recovered from the site, showing a distinct shipwreck effect from its long immersion in saltwater. It has since been certified and encapsulated to preserve its unique appearance and historical connection.
