The 1860 Liberty Seated quarter minted in New Orleans represents a significant moment in American numismatic history. With a mintage of just 388,000 pieces, this silver issue is particularly notable as it was the final quarter dollar struck at the New Orleans Mint for over thirty years, with production of the denomination not resuming there until 1891. Struck in 90 percent silver, the coin contains approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin showcases Lady Liberty in a seated position. In her hands, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap while her other hand rests upon a shield. The reverse displays a detailed eagle perched upon a branch, grasping three arrows in its talons, with a shield positioned across its chest. This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of Gobrecht's classic nineteenth-century design.
