In the decade preceding the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced small silver five-cent pieces known as half dimes. The 1861 edition, struck in Philadelphia from 90 percent pure silver, represents a classic era of American coinage. Containing 0.0359 troy ounces of silver, this diminutive coin showcases the artistry of the mid-nineteenth century on a remarkably small canvas. The obverse side presents a seated figure of Lady Liberty. In her hands, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield. The year 1861 is inscribed clearly beneath her feet. On the reverse, a delicate, detailed wreath wraps around the center of the coin, framing the denomination of the piece.
