The year 1861 marked a period of immense transformation, and this silver half dollar from the New Orleans Mint stands as a silent witness to that era. Struck with a purity of 90 percent silver, the coin contains approximately 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Its worn surfaces, graded as Almost Good, carry the soft patina of a long-circulated piece of currency that passed through many hands. On the obverse side, the design features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests on a shield. The reverse displays an eagle with a shield across its chest, perched on a branch while clutching three arrows in its talons. Just below the eagle, the distinctive "O" mint mark is visible, indicating its origin from the historic New Orleans facility.
