The 1861-O Liberty Seated half dollar is a fascinating silver coin minted in New Orleans. Containing 0.3599 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900, this fifty-cent piece carries the distinct 'O' mint mark, signaling its origin from the historic southern branch mint during a highly consequential year. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin features the figure of Liberty seated. She holds a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while supporting a shield with the other. The year 1861 is inscribed below her feet. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted perched upon a branch, grasping three arrows in its talons. A shield is positioned across the bird's chest, surrounded by the inscriptions 'AMERICA' and the denomination 'HALF DOL.' This specimen survives in Very Good condition, offering a tangible connection to the mid nineteenth century.
