1862-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar AU

Struck during a turbulent period in American history, this 1862 silver half dollar represents the artistry of the San Francisco Mint. Containing 0.3575 troy ounces of actual silver content, the coin is composed of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. This specific piece has survived the decades in an Almost Uncirculated condition, retaining much of its original detail and design sharpness. The obverse features a classic representation of Liberty, depicted in a seated position. In her hands, she holds a staff topped by a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below this central figure, the year 1862 is clearly visible. This elegant composition was created by Christian Gobrecht. On the reverse, a powerful eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest, perched upon a branch while grasping three arrows in its talons. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the eagle, with the denomination HALF DOL. positioned at the bottom. Directly above the denomination, the 'S' mint mark indicates that this coin was produced at the branch mint in San Francisco, California.
